What is the Free Main Panel Upgrade Program?

California is helping homeowners upgrade their old electrical panels for free if they meet certain eligibility requirements.
If your home still has a 60–100 amp panel or isn’t equipped for modern electrical needs (EV chargers, solar, HVAC, new appliances, etc.), you may qualify for a fully covered 200-amp main panel upgrade.

WHY IT’S WORTH IT

Why This Program Is Worth Trying

A main panel upgrade is one of those “you don’t think about it until you need it” projects — and it can be expensive. In most cases, a traditional 200-amp main panel upgrade can cost thousands out of pocket depending on your home’s setup, electrical requirements, and permitting.

That’s why this is worth a quick check: if you’re income-qualified and approved, your 200-amp upgrade may be covered at no upfront cost — so you can put that money back into your home and still get the safer, modern capacity you need.

Program note: Some homes may require additional work not covered by the program, including but not limited to panel relocation or upgrades outside standard scope.
